Magnesium

Magnesium contributes, among other things, to normal muscle and nerve function and to normal energy-yielding metabolic processes. It is also involved in processes related to protein, bone and DNA.
Possible signs of insufficient intake
Insufficient magnesium intake can present with nonspecific symptoms; possible indications may include neuromuscular complaints. Individual symptoms do not establish a diagnosis and should not be assessed in isolation.
Points to consider at high intake
High amounts from supplements can mainly cause gastrointestinal symptoms such as diarrhoea, nausea and abdominal cramps. With severely impaired kidney function, the risk of magnesium accumulation increases; high doses should then be medically assessed.
Special considerations
With impaired kidney function, magnesium excretion is reduced. Product dose, magnesium form, tolerance and total intake should therefore be considered separately.
Interactions / caution
Magnesium can affect the absorption of certain medicines, including some antibiotics and bisphosphonates. Timing intervals and individual medication should be reviewed with regular use.
